History in
a Pecan Shell
Minerva was once called Midway for its equidistant location
between Rockdale and
Cameron. The town was surveyed
in 1891 and named in honor of Minerva Sanders née
Duke. She donated the 30 acres for the town when the San
Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad came through that year.
The oldest structure
in Minerva was built by Thom Jones, the SAAP RR Stationmaster. The
first postmaster was David Robinson who served from 1915 to 1949.
1949 saw the
consolidation of the Minerva school with the Rockdale and Cameron
School District.
