History
in a Pecan Shell
Settlement first
began in the1820s. The town became a trading center for area plantations
in the mid-1800s. Tunis had a post office in 1878. Dog races held
on Sunday gave the community the unofficial name of “Dogtown.”
During the 1890s Italian immigrants settled in the area and by the
late 1800s the town was thriving with four physicians, a store, a
blacksmith, a saloon, school, and church.
Population figures:
1904: 187
1936: 100
1941: 150
In 1945 the Tunis school merged with the Snook
ISD. The New Jerusalem Church and the Old Bethlehem Church are still
open and serving the community at the time of our visit in 2003. |
