Wellborn post office and the new water tower

History in
a Pecan Shell
The
name of the town has been attributed to a well, a man named E. W.
Wellborn, or a landowner named W. Willburn.
A timeline of significant historic events in Wellborn:
1867: Wellborn was originally a construction camp of the Houston and
Texas Central Railroad. John and Thomas Royder of Rock Prairie established
the first store, a lumberyard and a cotton gin.
1868: The post office was granted under the name Wellborn's Station
1871: Name was changed to Wellborn
1885: Population is fifty, and Wellborn has a school, gin, and a gristmill.
1910: The population reached 400
1950: As Bryan - College
Station grew - Wellborn's population declined to only 40
1987: Population is 100 and it has remained more or less at that number
2001: Wellborn gets a new water tower. |

I
grew up about two miles from Wellborn in the 50's and 60's. The most
important landmark back then was Neelley's store, which also
housed the post office.
Mr. Neelley was a fantastic old man, who always had time for a little
boy on a bike. I would ride over there for a root beer in the summer.
It was absolutely the only thing within riding distance. Neelley's
was a real old-time general store, selling a bit of everything. It
had that cool general store smell. There was a little room behind
the counter with a barred window that served as the post office.
Another old family in Wellborn was the Pfannstiel's, as I recall.
