History in
a Pecan Shell
The community had
originally known as Ellis Prairie, named after 1839 land grantee
Benjamin B. Ellis. The town started around the time of the Civil War.
A school was established (known as the Ellis Prarie School) but in
1903 when the town applied for a post office, it was under the name
of Friday. (See Forum below)
With no railroad connection, growth was at a snail’s pace, although
the basic components (gin, gristmill and store) were in place by 1914.
The community was hit hard by the Great Depression and lost population
and it ended the 1940s with an estimated 50 residents.
The Friday post office closed its doors in the mid 1950s and thereafter
mail was delivered through Groveton.
Friday is now described as a “dispersed community” with no discernible
center, although it retains a community center and a cemetery. The
1990 census figure of 41 grew to 99 by the 2000 census. |

Subject: How
Friday TX got its name
Friday Tx got its name from my great-great grandfather Luther Friday.
He purchased the land in the early 1900's. Thank you, Kellie Skarda,
