History
on a Pinhead
Another town
named by people homesick for their former hometown, this is one
of two Savanahs in Texas, the other
a tiny community in Marion
County.
Savannah had a post office as early as 1846 but its chances of growth
were dashed when it was bypassed by the railroad in the 1870s.
The railroad
chose Walker Station to the north (now present day Annona).
The predicable decline set in as people moved to the rail line.
Today, although there is nothing left, a church and cemetery
keep the name alive.
