The Astoria-Megler
Bridge
U.S. Highway 101
over the Columbia River
Connecting Oregon with Washington State |
The world’s
longest cantilever through-truss bridge in the world was opened in
late August 1966. Construction had started in November four years
earlier. Completion of the bridge was the last link on the Pacific
Coast Highway connecting Mexico and Canada.
Prior to the bridge’s construction, a ferry (which couldn’t operate
in inclement weather) connected Oregon with Washington. The original
$24 million cost was recouped by a toll which was removed on Christmas
Eve, 1993.
The bridge’s clearance is 196 feet at high tide) and is 4.1 miles
long. The main superstructure is nearest to the Oregon side. Astoria,
Oregon is a highly-polished community with a lot to offer the historic
tourist. It has been the backdrop of at least five movies – the two
most widely-seen being The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop.
The town dates from the early 1800s and has a remarkable masonry tower
which provides a spectacular view of town and bridge. |
