History in
a Pecan Shell
The name, according
to local legend comes from the combination of Bert and Clair Lucas
- local ranchers.
Berclair was in a ranching area when the railroad came through in
1889. A post office was established the same year and a hotel that
was built for railroad workers later handled travelers from the daily
train between Victoria
and Beeville.
In 1892 they had a weekly newspaper and about 20 businesses.
The population reached a high of 350, but in the 70s had dwindled
to only 61. In 2000 its estimated at 253. |
