Denhawken History
in a Pecan Shell
Denhawken
was settled by German farmers that transmigrated from Fayette
and Austin Counties
in the late 1890s. The San Antonio and Gulf Railroad came through
in 1898. The town had two stores in the 1930s with local children
attending the nearby Dillworth Ranch School.
Today the former school sits at the town’s one intersection. In 2002
the barbecue pits showed its use as a community center.
The Denhawken cemetery
is about 1/3 of a mile east. Recently erected plaques in front of
the cemetery give a short history of the community and the contributions
on the care and upkeep of the cemetery. |
The Denhawken Cemetery
"Formerly know as Mesquite Prairie Cemetery, it was founded
in 1904 by the German farmers who had recently moved to the area from
Fayette and Lavaca
counties in search of more land for their large families. The first
burial was that of baby Hugo Steenken in 1906..." - From the

"The chimney
of the old school is now used for a Buzards roost."
