History in
a Pecan Shell
On the tracks of the International-Great Northern Railroad.
Wetmore arrived with the building of the Houston and Great Northern
Railroad in 1890. Railroad official Jacob S. Wetmore is the town’s
namesake.
A post office opened in 1890, and a town started forming around it.
The population had reached 25 by 1914 and in 1920 the town was busting
at the seams with 50 residents. Prior to the U.S. entry into WWII,
Wetmore’s population had reached 150. The town was still identified
as a separate town as late as 1985 when there were 175 people living
here It has since been absorbed by encroaching San
Antonio and doesn’t appear on modern maps. |
