There
are only two parks managed by the Guadalupe/Blanco River Authority. One of them
is Lake Wood and the other isn't. Their number is 830-672-2779. They refer to
themselves as "the best kept secret in Texas" and it's not far
from the truth.
Drive west out of town on Hwy 90A. On your left you will see FM 2091. Turn left
here and follow this road to the park. Unfortunately the confluence of the Guadalupe
and San Marcos Rivers is on private property, but here you can enjoy the tranquilly
of the Lake, the sound of the river flowing over the dam, and a
park that looks as well tended as a golf course. Squirrels are abundant
and let's be honest, they're better dressed than golfers. There are many picnic
tables with great views of the river or lake. We
spoke to the Park Manager, Mr. Mark Henneke and found him to be the son of Dee
Henneke, driving force of the DeWitt County Wildflower Association. This was news
to us, but was known long ago by the Henneke family. During the summer months,
the entire town of Gonzales has been known to shut down and come to the dam and
stand downwind of the spray.
If you must leave, return to Hwy 90A and make a left and then take the first right,
which is a continuation of FM 2091. Follow this for the approximate 8 miles to
Ottine and Palmetto State Park.
