View of Palo Duro Canyon
"It doesn't take much imagination to see where the Prairie Dog Town fork of the Red River once ran through. You can also see some of the roads down in the canyon that I drove on later." - Terry Jeanson

Palo Duro's Enduring Pageant by Mike Cox
"The show debuted in 1966 and grew into a summer tradition. Thanks to news media exposure, local marketing efforts and old-fashioned word of mouth, the pageant’s reputation built with each passing season. In recent years, USA Today included it in its “Top 10 Must See Theaters in America” and the American Bus Association’s “Top 100 Attractions in North America.”

An estimated 4 million people have viewed the pageant over the last 50 years. In recent seasons, the show’s three-month run (six days a week with Mondays off) has drawn about 65,000 annually.... more "

  • Palo Duro Gold Rush of 1949 by Mike Cox
Once upon a time, a shower of shiny gold coins fell from the sky over Palo Duro Canyon State Park south of Amarillo. No, really. This isn’t a fairy tale. That actually happened one Saturday in the late spring of 1949, a decade and a half after the scenic and history-rich Panhandle park opened to the public on July 4, 1934... more

  • Gentlemen's Agreement by Mike Cox
    Dutch Henry and Charles Goodnight
"When Goodnight saw it, he realized he had found a near-perfect location for a ranch. The canyon walls offered natural fencing for his livestock and the flowing waters of the Prairie Dog Fork of the Red River would keep the mouths of his cattle wet and nourish the grass needed to fill their bellies." ...more

  • A Tour of Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Some of Texas' most spectacular scenery in a 16,000 acre park with 1,000 foot cliffs.

    Photographer's Note:
Sit back and enjoy a small tour of Palo Duro Canyon. My photos cannot capture the magnitude of this place and a wide angle lens would really have come in handy, but I hope I can convey some of this marvelous area to you through my pictures. - Terry Jeanson

Palo Duro Canyon - Texas State Park
Ladies and gentlemen, we are beginning our descent.

Palo Duro Canyon - Texas State Park
Once you start driving down into the canyon, the various geological formations and centuries of erosion start to reveal themselves.

Enjoy the scenery while using the convenient facilities. Showers are also available.

Palo Duro Canyon, Castle Peak - Texas State Park
Two of the more distinctive features in Palo Duro Canyon are Capitol Peak (above and in postcard below) and Lighthouse Peak (see postcard below.) Lighthouse Peak can only be reached by a hiking trail if your desire is to see this very remarkable formation close-up. During my visit, I didn't have the energy to make the hike.

This rock formation, sticking up like a little thumb, is part of Capitol Peak.
