History in
a Pecan Shell
Finis was along Rock Creek where the Young,
Jack, and Palo
Pinto county lines converge.
A timeline of significant events in Finis' history:
1880: Finis was founded at a natural crossing of Rock Creek
and the town named after cattleman and merchant, Finis Marshall.
1881: The town had a post office and served as a stage stop
along the Fort Belknap-Weatherford road.
1884: Finis had a general store, a steam gristmill and cotton
gin, and an estimated population of fifty.
1889: A shootout between a lynch mob and the Marlow brothers
sent two of the brothers to the Finis Cemetery. This incident was
later screen-written into the movie The Sons of Katie Elder.
(See Forum below)
1896: The town had an estimated 100 inhabitants, served by
Methodist and Christian churches, three general stores, and a blacksmith
shop.
The community had a school in the early 1900s.
1920: The Finis post office and school closed in the early
20s, and the community disappeared - leaving only the Finis Cemetery.

This shootout between
a mob and the Marlow brothers did not happen in or near the town of
Finis. The incident occurred near Graham,
TX. Three of the Marlow brothers are buried in the Finis cemetery.
This historical incident was loosely interpreted in the mob attack
in the movie "The Sons of Katie Elder." But the movie is in no way
a complete representation of the Marlow brothers or the event in history.
