Atascosito
- Not to be confused with Atascosita, the present-day development
in North Harris County.
History in
a Pecan Shell
Originally built
as a Spanish military garrison to prevent the French from trading
with Indians in east Texas and the troubles that would ensue from
that trade. It later centered on the homestead of George
Orr (see marker text).
It later became a crossing / stopping point for travelers on the road
from Goliad/
Refugio, Texas
to Opelousas, After the development of the Texas
cattle industry, the eastward portion of the road was used by
cattle drivers to deliver beef to New Orleans.
Today the three markers serve as a tombstone for the former town. |
