The 1966 Galveston County Courthouse

On 21st and Ball
"The architects are: Raymond Rapp Jr. & Ben Kotin and Tibor Beerman

The building is constructed of brick, concrete, steel, marble, and granite with beautiful wooden paneling in the court rooms.

Today, it is still used as a courthouse -- the office of the tax accessor and county judge are located there.

The 1966 courthouse is highly regarded for its modern architecture. Governor John Connally proclaimed it the most beautiful courthouse in the state of Texas. History is a continuum and
Galveston is known for its 19th and 20th century architecture.

My father is Tibor Beerman, the primary architect of the courthouse. You can find his name in marble on the outside and inside of the building's entrance. When he designed the new (1966) courthouse in the early 1960's he tried to save the old 19th century courthouse. Unfortunately, the 19th century courthouse was in such poor condition it could not be salvaged.

When they built the new courthouse on Broadway many of the occupants of the 1966 21st Street Courthouse did not want to move. Many of the attorneys were upset because the court rooms in the new courthouse were closed and did not reflect the concept of open justice. The tax accessor and the county judge didn't move to the new facility on Broadway. When designing the 1966, 21st courthouse beautiful windows were in the court rooms and allowed easy access to the public for viewing trials. We were very pleased that they renovated the 1966 courthouse and the people of
Galveston are very proud of their courthouse. It was the first building restored after hurricane Ike and being designed by my father it was built to withstand hurricanes.
Thank you"
- Lillian E. Beerman, PhD, December 01, 2012
