A Visit to Nursery,
TexasPhotographer’s
Notes: The Methodist
fellowship hall looks to be perhaps an old school. The main drag with Nursery’s
former businesses is pretty much gone now and a new four lane highway (83) has
taken it's place. -

History in a Pecan
Shell
Gilbert Onderdonk, early
horticulturist established a nursery here in 1883 along the tracks of the San
Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railway. The townsite had been part of a huge tract that
had belonged to Silvestre De León, son of empresario Martín De León.
A
post office opened in 1884 and Onderdonk
served as postmaster. The population of Nursery largely depended on which season
and how many workers Mr. Onderdonk needed.
