History in
a Pecan Shell
Said
to be the first European community in Nueces
County, the town is named after the Santa Petronila Ranch, which
had been alongside Petronila Creek.
The town’s first school opened in 1912, which may have been the town’s
high-water mark. Population figures are not available but after WWII
the community was in decline. The proximity to Corpus
Christi and Driscoll may have
quashed any hopes of serious growth. In the early 90s the town still
retained at least two businesses. The 1990 population of 155 has since
declined to 83 for the 2000 census. |
