History in a Pecan Shell

Settlement began here in the late 1880s and it can’t be said with certainty that it was named for local cedar trees. Some say it was named after the town of the same name in Washington County.

A school was built in 1898 and there were enough children in the area to declare it a district by 1900, the same year a Baptist church was built.

In 1916 a post office opened two miles NW of Cedar Hill under the name of Alcino. The post office was in the store of John Dillard. The store was successful enough to support John, so a relative named Dave decided to open Cedar Hill's first store.

Although no population figures are available, it appears the 1930s and 1940s were Cedar Hill’s peak years. Besides a brick school, the community also had two churches as well as an icehouse, café and the aforementioned store.

The local economy allowed for the construction of a grain elevator in the early 1960s.

The Cedar Hill school consolidated with Floydada schools in 1950 and by the mid 1980s the population had decreased to only ten. A recent population explosion has more than tripled that number – bringing it to 36 for the 2000 census.
