History in
a Pecan Shell
First settled by
Charles and J. H. Hitch, the community came to life with the arrival
of the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railroad in the 1920s. A post
office was granted in 1930 and remained open until the mid 1950s.
The population was given as 100 in 1939 and remained there through
1948. In 1954 the Hitchland school merged into the Gruver
ISD. The 1980 census reported twenty-seven people and that same number
was used for the 2000 count. |
