Joanna Troutman
“Betsy Ross
of Texas”
by Luke Warm |
Born
in Crawford County, Georgia in 1818, Joanna Troutman never set foot
in Texas,
yet she is interred at the Texas
State Cemetery in Austin.
She died at her Georgia estate in 1879 but her remains were moved
to the Texas
State Cemetery in 1913, honoring a request from Texas Governor
Colquitt.
Her contribution to Texas
history was in the sewing of a battle flag for the Georgia Battalion
of volunteers in 1835. The flag was first flown at Velasco
in January of 1836 and was taken to Goliad
where it served as the National Flag of the Republic of Texas after
the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed.
Troutman’s design of a blue five-pointed star on a white background
bore the words: “Texas and Liberty” on one side and the Latin inscription
of "Where Liberty dwells there is my country" on the other.
In addition to her statue,
an oil portrait hangs in
the State
Capitol. |
