History in
a Pecan Shell
The name suggests
the hyperbole usually employed by “town builders” in marketing their
site to would-be residents. This may be the case here, but if so,
the claims seem somewhat exaggerated. “Space” was ample in this part
of Haskell County,
but little else.
Other than its appearance on this 1920s
map and the postal cover below provided by John
Germann, little or nothing is known of this spot.

AMPLE, TEXAS
by d.knape
Texas used to be
a prime example,
of unfettered acres
few white man trampled
Prairie dogs and dust
across the Panhandle,
in the midst of all this
the proposed town of Ample
Cowboys came first
on dust they strangled,
then settlers came
dubious carrots dangled
There weren't no water
and no free samples,
but the land was cheap
all there was, was Ample.
