Putnam did achieve a modicum of fame
by being the source of the Burkett Papershell Pecan. A man named Orr
had owned the tree - but when the sons of J. H. Burkett came home
from a squirrel hunt with the pecans in their pockets - it was Burkett
that recognized the nuts value.
He tried for years to graft the tree with other native stock - finally
achieving success in 1903. Thankfully, his diligence paid off since
the original parent tree was destroyed in 1910.
The original grafted tree is marked by a fence and sign - and can
be found near the Eastland
County line just N of I-20 and half a mile E of Farm Road 880.
