History in
a Burkett Pecan Shell:
Born with the
arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railroad in 1880, Putnam had previously
been known by the much more Texas-sounding name of Catclaw.
The name change came with the opening of a post office. The namesake
is said to be General Israel Putnam - a Revolutionary soldier more
famous in Connecticut than in Texas.
Around 1910 Putnam had a chance at becoming a health resort for its
water. But the biggest "Water town" in Texas - Mineral
Wells wasn't all that far away. Hopes were dashed before anything
got off the ground.
The population was a respectable 250 persons in 1890 and by 1940 it
was bursting at the city limits with 487 Putnamites.

Merlin Mitchell from Putnam, Texas
I am a WWII
Veteran and served with a man from Putnam, Texas. He was a very
special person to me and would like to find out, if possible, his
last known whereabouts. His name is/ was Merlin P. Mitchell and
her was a fighter pilot - flying Spitfires with the 307th Fighter
Squadron, 31st Fighter Group. He was shot down and taken prisoner
by the Germans. I had heard that he had attended one of our reunions.
Unfortunately it was one that I didn't attend and I haven't been
able to hear any more about him. If anyone in Putnam (or anywhere
else) has any information on Merlin Mitchell, I would greatly appreciate
it. - Bill Dickerson, billdickerson1@cox.net, Owasso, Oklahoma,
