History in
a Pecan Shell
By Carolyn
Heinsohn
A farming community located in the southern part of the county between
the east and west Navidad Rivers on FM Road 615 north of Schulenburg.
A two-story
Catholic school, called St. Anthony's, was built in 1902 by Rev.
Gerlach of High Hill.
Catholic nuns served as the teachers.
There were no businesses established here.
Some of the early Czech and German-Moravian settlers were the families
of Joe Demel; Anton Kainer; Joe and Frank Stanzel; Raymond, Henry
and Emil Christ; Frank Mensik; Frank Winkler; Franz Schmidt and
Frank Brossmann. They were members of St.
Mary's Catholic Church at High
Hill, but the distance from their farms to the school in High
Hill necessitated the establishment of a school nearby.
After the 1920s, the Rudolph and Emil Heinrich, Frank Kainer, Alfred
Stanzel, Fred Kloesel and A.B. Cernosek families were also living
here.
Known in the mid-1900s for its community baseball team, the Middle
Creek Mudcats.
Addendum:
It was a community with only a Catholic School and a baseball team.
There were probably social events at the school, but there never
were any business establishments or a platted area... I don't know
what happened to the school building. After consolidation, it may
have been dismantled or moved. Therefore, there is nothing to see
at the site.
There were farms all around the school, and most probably there
are still descendants of some of the early settlers living in the
area. Some farms have been subdivided, so there are newcomers as
well. Since the school at High
Hill was too far away for the children in the Middle Creek area,
the parents built the school, which was staffed by nuns.
There were other similar communities in Fayette
County, where there was only a school and not much more - Sedan,
Mecklenburg, Stella,
Bordovice, etc. - Carolyn
