GUADALUPE RIVER STATE PARK

3350 Park Road 31
Bulverde, Texas 78163-3608
(830) 438-2656

Take IH35 south to TX 46 in New Braunfels and go west about 40 miles.

Thanks to a handful of canoeists who lobbied the Texas Legislature in the mid-1970s, this 20-mile stretch of the upper Guadalupe River is now preserved as a state park. As you approach the park you drive through the scrubby Hill Country terrain dotted with live oak and juniper trees. The closer you get to the river, the lusher the vegetation becomes. Once you enter the park you drive through three different camping areas to get to the river itself, a jewel in the heart of the Hill Country. A large parking lot leads to a sloping, grassy bank overlooking the water. The hill is dotted with picnic tables and ends at a sandy beach at the waterfront. The river makes a wide bend through limestone cliffs and shady cypress trees to form an ideal swimming spot. The cliffs have numerous tiny caves that are home to a variety of wildlife. A small series of rapids empties into a calm, glassy pool that is deep enough to swim in over your head. Other water sports are popular on other sections of the river, such as water-skiing and canoeing. Concessions and rest rooms are available. Pets are allowed on leashes.
