History in
a Pecan Shell
The
community came into being in the mid 1880s and was named for early
settler (and first postmaster) E. Hylton who assumed his duties
in 1886.
The town’s nearness
to Blackwell stymied growth since
Blackwell had a railroad connection.
Although Hylton’s population has been reported as high as 500 residents.
In 1899 a woman named Lille Franks, started the Fish Creek School.
It seems nothing of note occurred in Hylton for decades. At the
close of WWII
it had a reported population of 187 but by the 1980 census it had
fallen to a mere 28 residents, staying there for the 1990 census
but dropping to a mere 6 by 2000.

"There
has long been discussions of Elija Hylton enscribing his name on a
rock on top of Hylton Mt. We now own the property in which Hylton
sits and have actually discovered the rock along with another from
the Kitchens family."
